Brainstorming an Idea!

We began by selecting a website or app to study. Each member suggested options, and together we explored them to find one relevant to student life with clear UI/UX challenges. This way, we chose a topic we were all genuinely interested in and excited to research.”

/Why Choose Handshake/

How We Chose Handshake as the Center of Our Research

How We Chose Handshake as the Center of Our Research

Frustrations – We’d all run into issues with the app at some point. Passion – We were genuinely excited to work on it and point out its pain points. Recruiting – Easy access to student users who knew the app well. Balance – Enough design issues to study, but also some strong elements to learn from.

/Design Evaluation/

Next, we moved on to the heuristics to get a better understanding of the application

Each of us conducted a heuristic evaluation using Nielsen Norman Group’s 10 Usability Heuristics, focusing on two per person. We scored Handshake’s main flows, then came together to compile and discuss findings. The next slide highlights the key insights from our team’s review.

/Who Else Is Out There/

We conducted competitive research to gain insights into the features and solutions of our competitors.

Based on this matrix, we came up with features that positioned our product above our competitors. How many competitors have you analyzed? What comparison criteria did you define? List the weaknesses and strengths of your competitors! Did you find a market gap? What possibilities did you find? How did the findings affect the overall strategy?

/Talking to Users/

Recruiting and Interviewing people

Handshake has a broad market and operates on a dual-sided platform that makes the website accessible to job seekers and employers and caters to their needs. In our study, we focused on job searchers who were students between the ages of 22 and 27 who used Handshake primarily for their job search, and who used it along with other job boards for their job search.

/What We Discovered/

Based on our task flow findings, we brainstormed and developed several recommendations.

After analyzing the task flows, we identified key pain points users faced. We brainstormed solutions to address these issues and improve usability. Our recommendations focus on making the experience smoother, more intuitive, and easier to navigate for users.

/The SUS Scale/

We performed a SUS assessment to measure how usable the website is.

Based on the SUS analysis, we made the following recommendations: Insight 1: 83% of participants noted the lack of a search feature. Recommendation: Add a search bar in the navigation for easier access. Insight 2: Users were unsure when tasks were completed. Recommendation: Provide clear progress indicators and confirmations without using modals or lightboxes. Insight 3: Resources are useful but hard to find. Recommendation: Improve navigation and incorporate previous recommendations to enhance discoverability. Insight 4: Content feels overwhelming and disorganized. Recommendation: Simplify the home screen, improve information architecture, reduce cognitive load, and clearly separate sections for easier scanning.
